BACKGROUND
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan emerged victorious in a significant election held on May 28, 2023, triumphing over his opponent Kemal Kilicdaroglu. With a decisive win, Erdogan secured his position as president by garnering 52.14% of the votes. Having previously served as the mayor of Istanbul from 1994 to 1998, the 69-year-old Erdogan played a pivotal role in co-founding the Justice and Development Party (AKP) in 2001. Subsequently, he served as the prime minister of Turkiye from 2003 to 2014.

Turkiye and Malaysia have established a longstanding tradition of diplomatic, economic, and cultural cooperation. Throughout the years, they have fostered robust relations founded on mutual respect and shared interests. Recognizing the significance of collaboration, both nations have prioritized engagement across multiple sectors, encompassing trade, investment, tourism, education, and diplomatic affairs. Notably, in the previous year, Turkiye held the position of Malaysia's largest trading partner and export destination, while also ranking as the sixth largest source of imports among West Asian countries.

In a series of tweets, the Malaysian Prime Minister YAB Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim said President Erdogan's re-election augured well for the future of Malaysia-Turkiye relations. Both leaders are known to enjoy close relations and often exchange views.

Join us for this insightful forum as we will explore the implications of the recent Turkiye presidential election on Turkiye-Malaysia relations, and delve into the prospects for future cooperation and collaboration.
