Islamic Finance Talk Series (IFTS): Demystifying Carbon Markets: Is There Space for Shariah Compliance?

[Event has ended]
Tue, 27 September 2022, 10am - 11am | Malay
International Institute of Advanced Islamic Studies (IAIS) Malaysia

As businesses and organisations throughout the world explore ways to reduce their emissions through the sale and purchase of carbon allowances, the voluntary and compliance carbon credit markets are booming. In essence, carbon markets are trading platforms where carbon credits are offered and purchased. The credits are supported by emission reduction initiatives that fulfil strict market-based standards and are result-based. Thus, the carbon market serves as both a tool for financing climate change and a method for corporations to offset their emissions. This online talk is intended to demystify the role of carbon markets and their practice in Malaysia and offer some perspectives for Islamic scholars and finance to consider.
