Today, this prohibition and the implementation of interest-free economic practices are considered nothing short of utopia. There is an immediate need to address this lack of understanding about the Islamic concept and injunctions on Riba. It is also imperative to understand certain key complex issues related to its application in the current scenario.

The main objectives of the symposium are as follows:

3. Provide practical and deep knowledge about the concept, meaning, and types of riba in the modern world today, and clearly discuss the basic causes of their prohibition,
4. Strengthen the faith of Muslims and reinstate their confidence in the just and universal commandments of Islam, which shall make it easy for them to reject this vicious system of interest.

TOPIC SYNOPSIS
1. Perang Dengan Allah dan Rasulnya : Riba, Larangan dan Solusi dalam Al Quran (in Malay)

2. Riba, the Oft Forgotten Major Sin : Appreciation of Riba in Hadith(in English)
Sheikh Tariq Appleby (SOUTH AFRICA), Instructor, AlKauthar Institute, the Discover Islam Centre (DIC) and the Al-Hijra foundation.
The concept of Riba (usury) is denounced in the Holy Quran and Hadith with tremendous emphasis. Several verses of Chapter 2 (Surah Baqarah) of the Quran strictly prohibit dealing in usury in any shape or form. The narrations of the Prophet (peace be upon him) further elucidate upon this prohibition. Yet, multitudes of Muslims take this prohibition very lightly. This talk, thus, will comprehensively elaborate on the narrations of the Prophet (peace be upon him) that explain the concept of riba and warn against the dire consequences of indulging in this practice. It seeks to strengthen faith and instill consciousness about the dangers of riba.

3. The Merchant of Venice : Riba in Other Abrahamic Religion (in English)
Sheikh Waleed Abdul Hakeem (CANADA), Independent Da'ie, Professor at Almaghrib institute, Director of Islamic Studies at Ilm Path Academy, and the founder of Life Path Training and Consultancy.

This unique session discusses a succinct historical epilogue and analysis of usury and its prohibition across time. The speaker shall use the famous play of Williams Shakespeare 'The Merchant of Venice' as a background example to expound upon and enable the audience to appreciate the true injustice and evil inherent in the very system of usury.

4. Fiqh of Riba : Falsafah Riba Antara Ekstrimis dan Liberal(in Malay)

Penceramah akan menyelami secara terperinci rasional riba, pengertian riba dan jenis riba yang tersembunyi dan nyata, serta aplikasi kontemporarinya. Para peserta juga akan dihuraikan fahaman riba antara ekstremis dan liberal serta fahaman mana yang sesuai mengikut pandangan jumhur ulama.

5. Benarkah Perbankan Islam Tanpa Riba? (in Malay)

Sesi ini akan membincangkan aspek perbankan dan kewangan Islam dalam realiti sejagat. Penceramah akan mengupas amalan di dalam perbankan dan kewangan Islam serta perbezaan antara jual beli (trade) dan riba (interest). Asas kadar faedah dan indeksasi juga akan dijelaskan. 6. Riba: The World Economy Paralyzer(in English)
Dr Aznan Hasan (MALAYSIA), President, Association of Shariah Advisors in Islamic Finance (ASAS). Assistant Professor in Islamic law and the former Head of Islamic Law Department, Ahmad Ibrahim Kulliyyah of Laws, International Islamic University Malaysia.
While discussions are rife about the impracticality of the abolition of usury, it is easy to lose sight of the tremendous havoc it continues to cause. This talk, with the help of recent examples, shall enlighten the audience about how usury became the main catalyst of the recent economic downfall and crisis across world. It shall throw light on the oppressive nature of excessive rates of interest and elaborate how compounded interest has drowned nations. It shall, then, highlight the principles of Islamic Economy and Finance that are being looked upon as the most viable solution to this global crisis.

7. The Harmful Effects of Riba on Our Lives (in English)
Sheikh Tawfique Chowdhury (AUSTRALIA), Chairman and CEO of Mercy Mission
This talk shall present a final overview of the extreme evil and adverse effects of usury. The speaker, an expert in Shari'ah and Islamic finance, shall highlight practical solutions through which Muslims can avoid falling in the wretched tentacles of riba. Finally, the talk shall explain the correlation and incongruence between unlawful income and barakah, and how true blessing and divine increase only accompanies that which is lawful and acceptable by the Creator.
