Prof Dr. Zainuddin Abdul Manan ( Prof Zain) is the Dean of the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia's (UTM) Faculty of Chemical Engineering and was the Founding Director of UTM-Process Systems Engineering Centre.
Zain began his career as a process & product engineer in PETRONAS and Hume Industries. He has been a researcher, consultant and trainer for 25 years. He has completed over 70 projects, has numerous patents and 300 publications that include books/chapters, 120 journals and 170 conference papers on sustainable planning and engineering of resources (e.g. food-chemicals-pharmaceuticals, energy, power, water & materials).
He has delivered over 300 seminars, professional workshops and invited lectures including his 2014 Imperial College Chemical Engineering Distinguished Lecture. Beyond classroom teaching, Zain is a passionate educator who has coached professionals from more than 400 companies and is the certified lead trainer for Malaysia energy managers accreditation.
Zain was the winner of Saudi Arabia’s 2008 Prince Sultan International Prize for Water and was awarded as one of the Top Research Scientists of Malaysia in 2013. In June 2014, he received both the UTM Outstanding Researcher and UTM Outstanding Academician Awards and the 2014 Pannonia Award for his contributions in the collaboration with the Centre for Process Integration and Intensification (CPI2) led by Prof Jiri Klemes of University of Pannonia of Hungary.
Believing strongly that one must practice what it preaches, Zain secured professional qualifications as a chartered engineer, a certified energy manager, a registered electrical energy manager and a certified professional trainer. He was the vice-chairman of the Board of Judges for the South East Asia (ASEAN) Energy Awards program. In 2010, he used his expertise to lead UTM’s sustainable energy management transformation program that led UTM to achieve USD 2.1 million energy savings between 2011 and 2013, and to win the ASEAN Energy Award in 2012.
